The IELTS One Skill Retake 2026 policy is a game-changer for students who narrowly missed their target band. However, it is not available to everyone. A common mistake candidates make is assuming all test formats offer this option. Before you book your exam, you must ensure you are choosing the specific test delivery method that allows for a second chance at a single module.
Critical Requirement: Computer-Delivered Only
The most important restriction to note in 2026 is that the One Skill Retake is currently only available for the Computer-Delivered IELTS format.
Why Format Matters
If you choose the traditional Paper-Based IELTS, you are generally excluded from the OSR option. Most test centers require you to have completed the full test on a computer at an eligible center to qualify for a retake. At The Exam Academy, we advise all students who are "borderline" in one skill to opt for the computer-delivered version to keep the OSR as a safety net.
Key Rules for the 2026 One Skill Retake
Beyond the format, there are three "Golden Rules" you must follow:
The 60-Day Window: You must book and complete your retake within 60 days of your original test date.
Original Center: You must usually take the OSR at the same test center where you sat the original full exam.
One Chance Only: You can only retake one skill per full test sitting. You cannot retake Writing today and Speaking next month.
Is the OSR Right for You?
While the OSR saves time, it is only a tool. If your score was more than 1.0 band below your target, a retake without significant new preparation may result in the same score. At The Exam Academy, we can help you sharpen the specific skills needed for your retake.
Final Check Before You Book
Confirm with your Center: Always ask, "Does this center support OSR for the computer format?" before paying.
Verify your University: Ensure your target institution accepts the "updated" TRF .
